Born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death, Hawking joined a generation of theoretical physicists who in the 1960's were renewing an interest in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. Hawking was to publish a series of works which would examine the implications of that theory and in doing so, overturn generations-old views of the universe.
